What is offshore development?
Offshore development is a generic term for development at overseas bases. Offshore development in Vietnam has a particularly long history and the country is home to many offshore development bases, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, because it can secure talented people at low cost.
Rising labor costs are a major problem, but they can still be lower than in Japan. However, there is a fundamental problem besides labor costs. No matter how much you control your costs, it would still be meaningless unless you can to make the most of the results. It is generally said that labor cost efficiency in offshore in Vietnam is about 60% compared to Japanese engineers due to language differences, lifestyle differences, working culture, poor employee retention rate, and various other reasons. If you dive in offshore development without these prior understandings, you might be disappointed and discouraged. This would be unfortunate for both parties.
Vietnam, although a socialist country, have gone through a major policy change in 1986 aiming for “price liberalization”, “international division of labor type industrial structure” and “improvement of productivity” (Doi Moi).
In addition, the education system has been improved from primary education, and the education level of the whole country has been raised. In recent years, the country have been strengthening the training of engineers nationwide, aiming to be an IT nation as a national policy, which resulted in a great number of excellent human resources. In short, Vietnam is home to many young talented engineers. Zenken Planet Viet Nam also has a base in search of such talented people. Furthermore, Vietnam is generally a pro-Japan nation, which makes it easier to start your business in the country.
Indeed, in recent years, rising labor costs in Vietnam have become a problem, and there has been fear that the country will finally reach its peak for offshoring. However, Zenken Planet Viet Nam, on the contrary, took advantage of being the latecomer and solved it while experiencing various problems. Vietnam’s offshore development still has plenty of room for development.
“One for all, all for one” is the goal of Zenken Planet Viet Nam. This goal includes the hope that Vietnamese engineers, Japanese engineers and clients will work hard together to achieve one goal and grow together. Each and every person involved in the project takes all the stakeholders seriously, thinks, worries and discusses, and as the result, we are confident that the project will be of great success when everyone is in the same direction.
In the past, we have worked on IT development in Vietnam for two years as an offshore client. As a client, we have had painful experience with offshore issues. At Zenken Planet Viet Nam, our approach is based on that experience. We believe our first-hand experience of the pain and struggles of users, and the solutions based on those struggles have become a part of our strength.
At Zenken Planet Viet Nam, we believe that improving labor efficiency is the key to offshore success. We practice two actions to make realize this theory.
- Trust Vietnamese people.
- Have a Japanese engineer stationed in the offshore office?
Number 1 may seem trivial, but in reality, relying on Vietnamese people and entrusting them to work will increase their motivation. As a result, the turnover rate will drop (Zenken Planet Viet Nam 2018 turnover rate is 4%). Decrease in turnover leads to accumulation of work experience. The accumulated business knowledge is transmitted from senior employees to junior employees. It will be far more efficient and more positive than having a Japanese senior educating each Vietnamese employee.
In addition to entrusting Vietnamese employees, having Japanese engineers constantly stationed in the oversea office to conduct negotiations between Japan and Vietnam as described in number 2 will help improving both the accuracy of the products and the efficiency of the schedule. This also makes it possible to respond to changes in specifications and priorities. Lastly, those Japanese employees play an important part in communicating the situation of the Vietnam side to Japan.
With these two practices, we will help all involved parties in Vietnam and Japan to cooperate for the same goal, and realize “One for all, all for one”.
